The American Silver Eagle is the best selling bullion coin in the World. In 2013 the US Mint sold about 42 million ounces. A record year at the mint since it started to produce the 99,99% pure silver coin in 1986.

The design of the American Silver Eagle didn’t changed over the years. The design on the coin’s observe was taken from the “Walking Liberty”design by Adolph A. Weinman, which originally had been used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin of the United States from 1916 to 1947. The reverse was designed by John Mercanti and portrays a heraldic eagle behind a shield. The eagle grasps an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left talon, echoing the Great Seal of the United States. Above the eagle are thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Colonies.

This week the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) recommended a replacement of the design for the reverse of the American Silver Eagle. The procedure of the CCAC has been done under very strict control. The committee evaluated 44 possible designs and selected 16 candidates. In the next step a vote was taken to bring up the winning design. The recommended design by the CCAC is the one that was originally considered for the reverse of the 2015 $5 Marshals Service Gold Commemorative Coins but there were some small changes.

The winning design is presented to the US Mint. The CCAC recommended the mint to make a several versions of the design. An eagle with an olive branch and arrows, one without an olive branch, a version with a small change to get more space between the edge and the beak of the eagle and the last to rotate the eagle which will result in a more rising flight.

These versions will be send to the Commission of Fine Arts for a review and they will inform the Treasury Secretary. He will eventually chose a new design or decide to stick by the old one.

When the Treasury Secretary decide to change the design of the American Silver Eagle in 2015 the older versions can raise in popularity. Silver eagles which are produced in 1986 en 1996 are very popular at this moment. The year 1986 because it is the first year of production and 1996 because of the 10th anniversary of the coin.
